What do students do in art?

All grades...
create a sketchbook and design a cover. The sketchbook is drawn in daily at the beginning of class.

6th Grade

In 6th grade, we create a name project so that I can get to know your names and see what your interests are! Our first big project is a paper quilt - this is a piece of paper with four different designs on it in a quilt pattern and a piece of metal in the middle. The next big project is a clay piggy bank - any animal can be made and a cork is included so the money can be removed. After that, we work with color schemes. We make a color wheel collage and then a triptych painting. This is a painting that is cut into three equal sections that are all painted using a different color scheme. The last project is a recycled sculpture. We make these out of cardboard, tape, and paint. We display these in the library so that everyone can see them!

7th Grade
In 7th grade, students learn how to carve a piece of linoleum. We create a radial symmetry design online and then carve a quarter of that design. It's printed four times to create our complete design. Next, we learn about perspective and coloring with colored pencil. Students draw a picture using one-point perspective then color is realistically using the techniques learned. After that, we learn about watercolor. We paint a watercolor landscape based on a real photo. Lastly, we work with pen and ink. We look at pictographs and choose some that describe us. We transform those into an interesting design that we add ink to and some ink patterns, as well as a pop of color using colored pencils. If there is extra time, we draw a large two-point perspective drawing.

8th Grade
In 8th grade, students create a clay container that encompasses their identity. After it has dried out and gone into the kiln, we glaze these to add color. Next, we create a Google Drawing of ourselves or a role model. This gets printed and cut out, then glued to a watercolor background. Finally, we write 15-20 words around the portrait that describe the subject. The last project of middle school is an oil pastel recreation of a famous artwork. This is in the shape of a puzzle piece and is put up on the ceiling. This artwork is the mark that the eighth graders get to leave behind on YBMS.
